It’s a big worry for parents as many schools shift to in-person learning: will my kid keep their mask on?

Two Texas parents hope their new self-published book Behind My Mask, Detras de me cubrebocas will teach kids about the importance of their face covering. Martha Samaniego Calder贸n and Dan Heiman wrote Behind My Mask, Detras de me cubrebocas, a bilingual Spanish and English education book. The project came out of necessity for educators Martha Samaniego Calder贸n and Dan Heiman.

芦My youngest daughter has always been scared of wearing anything on her face,禄 Samaniego Calder贸n said.

It was the start of the coronavirus pandemic and face coverings began to show up everywhere.

芦She was very scared and stressed. And I experienced a lot of anxiety and frustration, too.禄

Samaniego Calder贸n knew she had to face her daughter鈥檚 concerns straight on. The book was inspired by Martha Samaniego Calder贸n children. 芦You have to be able to name the emotion in order to deal with it,禄 explained Samaniego Calder贸n.

Out of that experience came the book. It was written along with husband, Dan Heiman.

It looks at the pandemic through the eyes of their 7-year-old daughter wearing different masks, like monarchs, rainbows, flowers, and even one that reads: 芦Hate is a virus.禄

芦I think it’s also opens up space to engage students and really important conversations that are happening right now,禄 said Heiman.

Heiman, a professor in the UNT College of Education, says the book could be a good way to prepare students for their first day of class.

芦My advice to teachers and parents is that before we can really delve into academic content, we’re going to really need to be patient and really realize that some really important things have happened and, and really focus on how students are feeling their emotions and let them talk and express those emotions and their unique identities.禄 The book Behind My Mask, Detras de me cubrebocas, is a bilingual Spanish and English education book. 芦We’re really happy that we have a book that reflects the Latino community and it’s a bilingual book it’s in Spanish,禄 said Samaniego Calder贸n, who’s an immigrant from Mexico.

Behind My Mask, Detras de me cubrebocas is also an unfinished work, on purpose. It leaves the ending open to interpretation for young readers.

芦What’s good about the unfinished nature is that students can draw, they can write stories,禄 said Heiman.

芦That’s the beauty of, of being a reader and making sense of on your own of the story,禄 said Samaniego Calder贸n, The book Behind My Mask, Detras de me cubrebocas, is a bilingual Spanish and English education book.
